Strategizing for Retail: Understanding How the "Retail Apocalypse" Impacts Planning
Retail apocalypse is term that has recently emerged to describe our economic environment, which is characterized by mass store closures, a rise in e-commerce, and an overabundance of retail space. From closing department stores to vacant storefronts, evidence of this economic shift is apparent along commercial corridors throughout the country, and even right here in Prince George’s County. Mr. Boone will tell us where this retail is going, and how we can proactively bolster our communities and ensure that they are economically resilient. Bobby Boone, AICP, LEED AP “Bobby specializes in qualitative and quantitative research methods and data-driven strategy at Streetsense. He serves on project teams to evaluate and forecast conditions from real estate markets to new food and beverage concepts. Throughout Bobby’s career he has worked with numerous public and private sector clients to help create and implement feasible, data-based strategies for retailers, restaurants, hotels, real estate, and neighborhoods across the country. […] Prior to joining Streetsense, Bobby served as a Fellow at Smart Growth America, LOCUS, and had participated in numerous commercial revitalization projects in urban and rural contexts. Bobby has a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Florida A&M University, and a Master’s in Community Planning from the University of Cincinnati, in addition to LEED AP Neighborhood Development and American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) credentials.”
