(English) A Proud Legacy and Bright Future: Honoring our ancestors, their mission, their courage, their sacrifice, and their love. Latinos and the Civil War.
In the mid-19th century, not all Latinos lived in the deep South. Many also lived in the North and Mid-Atlantic, creating communities in and around large port cities such as Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New York. Like today, these newcomers sought to integrate into the society of their new homeland and gain acceptance through military service. Yet, even though Latinos volunteered to fight during the Civil War, their contributions have been traditionally overlooked compared to German and Irish immigrants. As a voice for justice and compassion towards Latino communities, Surratt House Museum staff will explore these untold stories, utilizing them as a tool to educate the public and other community groups about the deep roots and roles of Latinos in our national narrative, to encourage tolerance and understanding of these communities and the combat the prevalent attitude that Latinos are outsiders without the right to make the United States of America their home.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2020 Virtual Presentations
Looking for videos from our 2020 Hispanic Heritage Month presentations? 2020 was a year like no other, and our programs were limited while many of our sites were temporarily closed in observance of social distancing guidelines. But, we still had great things to share! Check them out on our YouTube page.
About Hispanic Heritage Month
Over 17% of our county’s population has roots in Mexico, Spain, Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala, or one of the many other nations in the Spanish-speaking world. As Prince George’s County grows and changes, we want to celebrate the amazing diversity of art and culture that people of Hispanic or Latin descent have added to the rich tapestry of our neighborhoods.
Each year, from September 15 to October 15, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with music, dance, and art exhibitions throughout the County. You’ll find opportunities for the whole family to create arts and crafts, savor delicious food, and hear stories—real and imagined—from around the world. The linchpin of our month-long celebration is our Annual Hispanic Festival, which in previous years has drawn thousands of celebrants from all over Prince George’s County and beyond.
